The institute, which bears the name of Shri H.M. Patel, was born in 1965. It was during th his 60 birthday celebrations in 1964 that Shri Patel donated the purse presented to him by his admirers and well-wishers to establish an institute to solve the problem of acute shortage of trained teachers of English in Gujarat. Today the institute serves as the Institution of Advanced Studies in Education (English). The institute offers the following courses:

1. B.Ed. (English) : One-year postgraduate degree course in education.
2. M.Ed. (English) : One-year course for graduates in English.

3. M.A. (English Language Teaching): For graduates with English as Principal subject.

4. M.A. (English Literature) : For graduates with English as Principal subject.
5. M.Phil in English Literature & Language Teaching
6. Ph.D. in English Language Teaching.

The institute has designed and published numerous print material, multi-media packages, audio and video material and teaching aids. It merits special mention that the efforts to teach English in rural and tribal areas have been going on for the last several years and that eighteen scholars from this institute have been awarded Ph.D. Degree in English Language Teaching under the Faculty of Education, Sardar Patel University. Within the area of its competence the institute has lent academic support to numerous national and state organizations and Cambridge University, UK. It is noteworthy that the institute is one of the few in our country that have been entrusted by the Ministry for Human Resource Development to conduct inservice training programmes for teachers and teacher-educators and that the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages recognises it as a centre to undertake research in English.
